What we do: Treaty of Waitangi workshops
Have you ever wondered about the history and relevance of the Treaty of Waitangi in New Zealand
today? Why didn't you learn about the Treaty at school or in tertiary education? Why do Maori keep
raising it as a grievance? Perhaps the best way you can answer your questions is to attend a Treaty of
Waitangi workshop. These are presented by Waitangi Associates (for more information visit
www.waitangi.co.nz), facilitated by the Napier Pilot City Trust.
The workshops provide an environment in which people can explore the Treaty of Waitangi and its'
implications in a safe, non-confrontational, participatory process. A framework is provided to enable
participants to understand the contemporary debate. Although primarily for Pakeha, the workshops are
open to all who wish to attend.
The workshop covers: cultural identity, honouring our stories, global colonisation, origins of NZ
settlement, NZ history pre-Treaty, the signing of the Treaty, post-Treaty legislation, assimilation -
consequences of colonisation, sovereignty issues, the Waitangi Tribunal and settlements,
contemporary issues - implications and models for the future.
The workshop is led by Robert Consediine who has had over 20 years experience as a Treaty
educator, working in more than 150 organisations. He enjoys wide community and organisational
support. As a best selling author he has also introduced the workshop process to groups in Canada.
A copy of "Healing Our History: The Challenge of the Treaty of Waitangi", a resource book of handouts
and a certificate will be provided to all participants during the workshop.
