WALK FOR UNITY

The week begins with the "Walk for Unity", commencing at 12:30pm on Monday - 20th April.  The public are invited to join our Trust and groups such as Rangatahi Toa Aotearoa (Young NZ Warriors) and the Leg Up Trust, to walk along the Marine Parade Rotary Pathway from the statue of "Pania of the Reef" to the Tutaekuri river.

The Walk will also include an 'eco' themed exercise (rubbish collection) with an emphasis on raising awareness for our environment and to "Keep Hawkes Bay Clean".

At the conclusion of the Walk, there will be a sausage sizzle - manned by officers of the Maraenui Community Policing team.

The main objective of the Walk for Unity is to show and spread the message to  support "peace and harmony" in the community.  This is seen in the numbers that attend with age being no barrier.

TREATY OF WAITANGI WORKSHOPS

For the past 6 years, our Trust Secretary - Kerry Kitione, has networked throughout Hawkes Bay, bringing Robert Consedine to this region.

In the 1980's, Robert and his wife - Trish (of Christchurch), established Waitangi & Associates Ltd.  Their mission is to run 2-day workshops focusing on the Treaty of Waitangi and the fundamental issues of this document.  It was also bought about to enable Pakeha and Maori to both learn about and confront New Zealand's colonial history plus understand the implications in the present day.  For further details, see their website: www.waitangi.co.nz

The workshops are conducted in a safe, non-confrontational, inter-actional atmosphere.  A broad range of issues from pre-1840 to present day are examined, with a diverse group from the public and corporate sector attending.  The workshops take place twice a year in Napier.

"With knowledge comes understanding and with understanding, there is less ignorance and intolerance"...

The following are a few comments from workshop participants:-

"I wish I had been taught more in depth at school than learning about other countries"

"People still make judgements and still choose to be uninformed"

"Every Official, Councillor or MP should be obliged to attend"

"Brilliant - an eye opener.  I recommend it"

Dates for the 2009 workshops are: Friday - 8 May 2009 & Saturday - 9 May 2009
